Early Life and the Journey to Mumbai

Born into a family of modest means in Kudal in the Konkan region, the young seeker came to Mumbai with little more than determination, a desire to study and the willingness to work hard. The uncertainties of city life, financial hardship and the search for direction became the background against which a life-changing encounter with Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj would unfold. What began as the struggle of an ordinary student gradually became the journey of a devoted disciple.

Meeting Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj

A meeting with Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj in Mumbai transformed the direction of his life. Introduced through a devotee of the lineage, the young student entered the company of the Master and found not merely a teacher, but a Sadguru whose guidance would shape every aspect of his life. Through the grace of the Guru, disciplined sadhana, unwavering trust and devoted service gradually became the foundation of his spiritual journey.

Gurumantra and Years of Sadhana

Under the guidance of Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj, disciplined sadhana became the foundation of his life. Initiation through Gurumantra, regular meditation, bhajan, study and unwavering remembrance of the Guru’s teaching gradually transformed knowledge into direct experience. Spiritual practice was never separated from work, study or family responsibilities. Every aspect of life became part of the path.

Trials and Grace

The years of sadhana were marked by financial hardship, uncertainty and many personal challenges. At times the burden appeared overwhelming, yet the words of Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj became a constant source of courage and strength. Rather than obstacles, these experiences became opportunities to deepen faith, perseverance and surrender to the Guru’s guidance.

After Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj’s Mahasamadhi

Following Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj’s Mahasamadhi, the outer presence of the Guru came to an end, but the inner guidance remained alive. The teaching continued through deep remembrance, continued sadhana and the living conviction that the Guru is never separate from the Self. Association with other senior disciples of the lineage further strengthened this journey and preserved the continuity of the tradition.

Awakening and Public Guidance

After many years of disciplined sadhana, devoted service and steadfast trust in the Guru’s teaching, Maharaj’s journey culminated in direct realization. The source tradition records this as an inner awakening in which the apparent separation between disciple, Guru and Reality dissolved, leaving only the recognition of the One Self. From that time onward, Maharaj dedicated his life to guiding sincere seekers through the same timeless path of Self-knowledge, devotion and direct experience.

The Meaning of Avadhootanand

The name “Avadhootanand” is not merely a personal title. It points to the untouched, eternal and blissful nature of the Self. For every seeker, it serves as a reminder that the goal of spiritual life is not to become something new, but to recognise what has always been present.
